During the overnight hours of June 12-13, 2025 (Middle East time), Israel used Air Force fighters and drones to attack Iran in a broad aerial barrage that left hundreds of key Iranian sites destroyed. Israel’s attack upon Iran occurred because of recent intelligence reports that indicated Iran might be only days away from being able to assemble a nuclear weapon.

Over the last several months, the US has been trying to peacefully resolve this crisis through diplomacy, but during recent days Iran has rejected all attempts at peace. The week before Israel’s attack upon Iran, senior leadership representatives in Iran’s political and military issued statements promising that they would destroy both Israel and the US once they obtained nuclear weapons.

President Trump had given Iran 60 days to make an agreement to dismantle their nuclear weapons efforts, and on day 61 Israel decided that it had no other choice but to act. During Israel’s overnight attack, the IDF destroyed many nuclear development sites in Iran, in addition to critical energy storage sites, radar and anti-aircraft missile batteries, ballistic missiles and launchers, and also targeted the highest military and political leaders within Iran. Israeli intelligence had discovered that top Iranian military leaders were meeting at a single location in Tehran to plot their response, and Israel seized the opportunity to take them out. It appears that Israel was able to take out 9-12 of Iran’s senior level government officials during the first night of attacks in addition to about 30 military leaders.

In addition, it has now become known that during Israel’s attack upon Iran, the IDF was able to take out 9 Iranian senior scientists working on their nuclear weapons program. This occurred because the Israeli intelligence was able to track these scientists as they traveled over the last few years.  This is reminiscent of Israel taking out the Hezbollah leadership in Lebanon through exploding pagers. Obviously, Israel had been carefully planning this brilliant attack scenario for a long time.

Latter during the night of Israel’s attack upon Iran, the Iran Revolutionary Guard (IRG) forces finally responded by sending about 100 small drone suicide bombers towards Israel, but the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) were successful in taking all of them out before they even reached Israeli territory.

However, perhaps the most incredible drone operation that occurred during Israel’s attack upon Iran was multiple IDF drone strikes that were all coordinated and launched from within Iran itself. A large team of Israeli Mossad intelligence agents and IDF troops working together within Iranian territory set up drone bases in the Iranian mountains and coordinated the drone attack to coincide with the IDF Air Force attack. They also had multiple drones hidden within many trucks, which were all beforehand positioned next to key target areas. The drones were used to take out the Iranian missile batteries in addition to some of their large ballistic missiles which could form the basis for a rapid response to any attack from Israel. The result was that no ballistic missiles were fired at Israel during or immediately after the operation.

President Netanyahu, in a televised speech during Israel’s attack upon Iran, said that the Israeli Air Force was part of an operation called “Rising Lion”. Netanyahu indicated that the military operation would go on for at least several days but would likely take a number of weeks. See this article for additional information.

During the following night, Iran responded by sending 3 waves of hundreds of ballistic missiles at various sites within Israel, mostly directed at civilian population areas. Both the US and Israel shot down most of these missiles, but some got through while others were intercepted, but the debris from the interceptor strikes still caused damage on the ground. As of this writing, there have been at least 24 Israeli civilians killed and as many as 500 wounded from the Iranian attacks. These figures are only approximations, because many damaged buildings have not been thoroughly searched for dead or wounded people trapped in the rubble.

During Iran’s ballistic missile barrage, Israel still continued to attack Iran. Reports have stated that the IDF Air Force has now achieved air superiority in the skies over Iran. This comes after Israel took out all of Iran’s anti-aircraft missile batteries and virtually neutralized the Iranian Air Force. In the dark of night, up to 70 Israeli aircraft attacked Tehran with no significant response from the IRG. As a result, hundreds of targets were taken out within Tehran and the surrounding areas. Reports have indicated that Iranian citizens are fleeing Tehran because of the severity of the bombings.  In recent days, both President Netanyahu and President Trump have warned the Iranian people that they should evacuate Tehran.  Videos have shown all of the highways leading out of the city were completely jammed with cars leaving.

In less than one week, Israel has decimated the IRG and the leadership in Iran.  Reports indicate that the Iranian military is fleeing and the Supreme Leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei, is in hiding.  Although Iran is still able to launch some ballistic missiles at Israel, the number of them has dramatically decreased every day as Israel is actively seeking out and destroying their missile launchers.  No one in Iran expected how Israel’s attack could so quickly defeat the Iranian military and take out so many senior level people in the government and military leadership.

At the time of this writing, President Trump is sending more aircraft carrier groups to the Middle East and flying in from the US many more fighters, bombers, and refueling aircraft for a potential strike on Iran’s remaining nuclear facility at Fordo.  This site is in the mountains southwest of Tehran and the main nuclear development site is buried deep within the rocky mountain.  Only the US with its 30,000 lb bunker buster bombs can take out this facility without having military troops actually on the ground to attack it.

It is clear that as Israel’s attack upon Iran continues, that Iran will be very vulnerable to the IDF Air Force and drones. Israel will repeatedly attack all of the Iranian nuclear development facilities and take out the remaining Iranian leadership to completely neutralize the threat from Iran. If President Netanyahu and Trump decide to collaborate to destroy the remaining nuclear sites along with the Iranian infrastructure, then Iran is likely to be completely defeated and unable to support or fund terror in the region for years to come.

Israel’s battles in recent months to take out the Iranian proxy terrorist groups of Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis was just the first part of trying to completely eliminate Iranian sponsorship of terror against the Jewish people. All of these terrorist groups, in addition to others over the years, have been financially supported by Iran and the oil rich nations in the Arabian peninsula. Israel’s attack upon Iran was designed to stop all of these attacks against them, whether directly from Iran or through their proxy groups.

Is Bible Prophecy being Fulfilled?

The wars that Israel has had to fight against many nations since their rebirth in 1948 were clearly predicted in Bible prophecy thousands of years ago (see the sections under the End Times topic Israel, with particular reference to the subsections entitled Wars and Battles of Israel and Trembling and Fear).

Jesus said that in the End Times the world would hear of “wars and rumors of wars” (Matt. 24:6). Israel was miraculously reborn as a nation in 1948 after nearly 2,000 years of the Jews being scattered among the nations in judgment. The Bible predicted that the Jews would return to the land in the Last Days; however, their return would not be a time of peace, but of trouble and fear. In addition, Ezekiel predicted that Israel would be attacked in the “latter years” by a group of nations led by Russia (Ezek. 38-39).  One of the nations predicted to be with Russia in this attack is Persia, which is modern-day Iran (see The Attack of Russia). Although Iran is being defeated today, they will remain an enemy of the Jewish people and still participate in the End Times attack upon Israel just as Ezekiel predicted.

As End Times prophecy continues to be fulfilled, God will lead the nation of Israel to a day of such trouble that they will finally turn to their Savior for help just in the nick of time before Jesus returns! That day is coming upon the world very quickly!
